Tani's Story

Among the various anniversaries celebrated all over the world, there are countries that celebrate on the same day with the same meaning, but there are many countries that have the same meaning but celebrate on different dates.

For example, Christmas is a special day that is celebrated not only in Christian countries but all over the world, but not many countries celebrate it on the same day and with the same meaning. The United States and European countries celebrate it on December 25th, South Korea and Japan celebrate it on December 25th in less Christian areas, and December 24th in more Christian areas. On the other hand, in the Russian Orthodox Church, Christmas is celebrated on January 7th.

As another example, International Labor Day is usually celebrated on May 1st. However, in the United States and Canada, it is celebrated on the first Monday of September.

As such, these anniversaries are celebrated all over the world, but the dates and methods may vary depending on regions, cultures, and religions. Likewise, Mother's and Father's Day in Korea are the same.

In most cases, Father's Day and Mother's Day are celebrated separately. In most countries, Father's Day and Mother's Day are celebrated on different days, but in Korea, Parent's Day is celebrated on May 8 every year, and Father's Day and Mother's Day are not celebrated separately.

But back in 1956, at the Cabinet meeting, May 8 was designated as Mother's Day only. Then, in March 1973, it was renamed Parents' Day in the 'Regulations on Various Holidays, etc.'.

To give another example, in the United States, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June, and Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.

작은 선물 - 넓은 마음

Parents' Day in Korea is a day to express gratitude and love to parents. This day has become a day to express gratitude to parents and to remind them of their love and interest once again. This is a day created to express gratitude for the difficulties and sacrifices parents go through while raising their children, and to express regret and respect for the infinite love and interest parents give to their children.

In Korea, on Parents' Day, children give presents to their parents, have a meal together, or plan special events or events. Through these events, you can feel a deeper sense of love and solidarity while spending precious time with your parents.

Then, what gifts or special customs do Koreans usually have?

Parents sometimes put flowers on their chest or wear flowers on their wrists to honor their parents on Parents' Day. However, this is not mandatory and may vary depending on each family's choice.

Wearing a flower on your chest or on your wrist is said to show gratitude and respect to your parents. Generally, white chrysanthemums are used, but you can prepare them with flowers or colors that your parents like.

However, it is most important to convey gratitude and love with a sincere heart without preparing flowers. It's a good way to call your parents directly to say hello, or give them a simple gift or card you made yourself.

Shall we share how to celebrate Parents' Day in your home country?
