Korean soju is famous all over the world. Makgeolli is also a famous alcoholic beverage in Korea. Do you have any friends who drank makgeolli? How does it taste? Shall we learn about makgeolli today?

Makgeolli's funny story

It's an alcoholic beverage made from rice, but it's explained that it's makgeolli because it's just filtered. It is characterized by a slightly savory, slightly sweet taste and a slightly tingling sensation. Along with soju and beer, it is a popular alcoholic beverage consumed in Korea. It is the only alcoholic beverage in Korea that is cheaper than bottled water of the same volume, so it has a strong image as a liquor for the common people or the elderly. yeah Unlike other alcoholic beverages, makgeolli has an appropriately low alcohol content of around 6%. Unlike beer, it does not make you feel full even after drinking it, and unlike soju, the taste itself is enjoyable, so it is perfect for drinking casually like water.

In the old days, poor people who could not buy expensive alcohol used alcohol dregs after making sake called Cheongju instead of drinking, or made it into sake bread. Alcohol that is mixed with grain powder and fermented once more is regarded as the origin of common Takju, or Makgeolli. Makgeolli is originally a brew made from rice, but when making alcohol with rice was banned in the 1960s and 1970s, there was a period of wheat makgeolli and barley makgeolli made with flour or barley powder. Companies are using 100% rice for the grains they enter.

What is the difference between makgeolli and other alcoholic beverages?

It is said that the price of alcohol is cheap, and you do not know when you drink it, but when you wake up after drinking it, you start to get drunk in earnest. Raw makgeolli comes in a bottle with yeast inside, but since the yeast inside generates carbon dioxide, it explodes when shaken and opened. You can imagine it when you think of blowing a cork by shaking champagne haha. Makgeolli has an alcohol content of 4-6%, and it is said that it has a fairly low alcohol content among alcoholic beverages, so it is said that people who drink it do not easily feel drunk.

When Koreans eat a lot of makgeolli

Makgeolli isn't just made from rice.
