Hello everyone~
Do you know what day this Friday is? It's Liberation Day! Today, let's learn about Liberation Day together!
Liberation Day, celebrated annually on August 15th, commemorates the liberation of both South Korea and North Korea from Japanese colonial rule (1910–1945). This national holiday commemorates the significant historical moment of liberation from Japanese colonial rule and the restoration of sovereignty. In South Korea, Liberation Day is deeply meaningful, as it is associated with the establishment of the Provisional Government and commemorates the dedication of independence activists.
Last week, I visited Nodeul Island in Seoul, where it was transformed into a meaningful space to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation. A large Taegeukgi display, swept through the river breeze, was a spectacular sight, and the space offered a glimpse into the history of the Taegeukgi from past to present. A representative display included 16 Taegeukgis, displayed chronologically, ranging from the "Denny Taegeukgi" from the late Joseon Dynasty in the 1880s to those from the Korean Liberation Army and the Provisional Government.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will hold a commemorative event on the lawn of the National Assembly Building on August 14th, commemorating the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation, from 8:15 PM for approximately two hours and 30 minutes. This event goes beyond a simple national anniversary and is a citizen-participatory project designed to transform various areas of downtown Seoul into "spaces where people can experience history and culture." Many famous singers will also perform.
Liberation Day was a moment that expanded beyond a simple commemoration to a space where you could see and experience history firsthand on Nodeul Island . If you have the chance, I recommend visiting Nodeul Island and experiencing Korean history. I went there and was deeply impressed.
Have a nice day~!
