Have you ever heard of phlegm rice cake? Actually, this is my first time hearing about this rice cake! The bar rice cake is white and has a long shape, so it symbolizes wishing for a long life and at the same time wishing for a long and bright life. The rice cake of Tteokguk that you are familiar with is a rice cake made from finely chopped rice cakes! You can also enjoy it on top of tteokguk by baking rice cakes in the oven and dipping them in honey or sugar!
3. Types of Korean rice cakes; Baekseolgi
As its name suggests, Baekseolgi is a white rice cake. It is a clean and sacred food and is used as a representative food for children's 100th day or first birthday.
4. Types of Korean rice cakes; Injeolmi
Injeolmi is a rice cake made with glutinous rice flour batter dipped in soybean paste and has a chewy texture. It often appears during holidays and traditional events, and is also placed on wedding tables. It is said that here, like the stickiness of injeolmi, it contains the meaning that newlyweds should live happily together.
5. Types of Korean rice cakes; Omegi rice cake
It is a special product of Jeju Island, made by mixing glutinous rice with mugwort powder and covering it with red bean paste and red bean paste. There are many stories about the origin of Omegi rice cake, but one theory is that it was made in an environment where water was scarce. If you are going to Jeju Island, be sure to try it!
6. Types of Korean rice cakes; songpyeon
Songpyeon, the representative food of Chuseok, is a rice cake that was originally called “Songpyeong” due to the character for pine (松) and the character for byeong (餅). It is said that the rice cake is made with sesame seeds, sugar, chestnuts, red beans, and soybeans. It’s also interesting that even in Korea, there are differences in shape depending on the region!
7. Types of Korean rice cakes; Garap rice cake
It is said that because there was a shortage of rice in an area called Hamgyeong-do, rice cakes were made using oak trees. In China and Japan, there is also a custom of wrapping rice cakes in oak tree leaves! In Chinese , it is called Park Labyeong (薄羅餠), and in Japanese, it is called Kashiwamo (柏餠).
