Have you ever played "Samulnori" among your foreign friends attending a language school in Korea? It is assumed that you have learned "Samulnori" to learn Korean. However, at that time, I only focused on the linguistic aspect, so I think that there are many people who do not know much about "Samulnori".

Also, foreign friends who have never attended a language school to learn Korean are thought to have fewer opportunities to experience "Samulnori" than international students. However, I think you need to know about "Samulnori" to understand Korean culture well. So this time, let's learn about "Samulnori".

Samulnori is a part of Korean traditional music, and refers to musical instruments played centering on objects such as kwaenggwari (instrument name), jing (instrument name), janggu (instrument name), and buk (instrument name). It started on February 28, 1978, when Kim Yong-bae and Shim Woo-seong proposed a performance in the "Samulnori" pungmul troupe (a group of people who perform traditional pungmul, or such people) at Space Sarang in Insa-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Unlike traditional pungmulnori, samulnori is played in a seated position, making it suitable for indoor performances. They mainly play Honam Pungmul (Pungmul style), Jjakdeuleum (Pungmul style), Uddari Pungmul (Pungmul style), Seoljanggu Nori (Pungmul style), and Yeongnam Pungmul (Pungmul style). It is said that the sound of jing (instrument name) makes you imagine wind, the sound of janggu (instrument name) makes you think of rain, and the sound of drum (instrument name) makes you imagine clouds.
