Everyone~~ It’s Chuseok holiday soon. This holiday season is a bit long, right? What are you guys going to do during the holidays? Chuseok is the biggest holiday in Korea. These days, you can see a lot of Chuseok-related advertisements and videos on TV and social media. In particular, there are a lot of advertisements for Chuseok gifts and food for Chuseok ancestral rites. In Korea, there are foods that cannot be missed on the dinner table during holidays. Do you have a friend who knows what kind of food it is? lol. Today, I will introduce you to Jeon, a representative traditional Korean food.

Korean traditional exhibition

Jeon is one of the oldest traditional foods in Korea. In the old royal court, it was also called Jeonyueo or Jeonyuhwa. In Seoul, it is called 'Buchimgae', and since the word 'Buchim' also exists as a synonym, it can be analyzed as 'Buchim+-gae', but the meaning of '-gae' is unknown. In English, it is called Jeon or Buchimgae, but sometimes it is overtranslated and called Korean pancake.

type of jeon

There are types that are made with flour or other dough as the main ingredient and are spread widely, such as green onion pancakes, chive pancakes, kimchi pancakes, mung bean pancakes, and wheat pancakes, as well as pumpkin pancakes, fish pancakes, sanjeok, donggeurangttaeng (meat balls), cabbage pancakes, and domebaegi pancakes (Gyeongsang-do), etc., where flour is the main ingredient. It can be divided into types that are first buried, coated with egg, and then fried. Although using flour and frying it with oil are the same, the two types of food are actually cooked differently. In the former, the main ingredient is the dough, and in the latter, the main ingredient is the filling. The former is also called pancake. There is also a pancake made by mixing pancakes. For example, there is kimchi pancake + meat pancake = kimchi pancake, or kimchi pancake + tuna pancake = tuna kimchi pancake, etc.

On rainy days in Korea, I eat a lot.

Jeon is mainly eaten as a holiday dish, but I eat it a lot even on rainy days in Korea. There is a strong perception that it is a food that strangely comes to mind on rainy days. In fact, statistics show that the demand for flour, the main ingredient of pancakes, increases significantly during the summer rainy season. There is a saying, “On rainy days, I eat fried rice cakes at home.” The perfect match for pancakes is makgeolli. When Korean people eat pancakes, they usually drink more makgeolli than soju or beer.

Interesting stories about criminal records in Korea

Since we make so much for the holidays, it's hard to get rid of the leftovers. Perhaps that's why secondary processing recipes for pancakes and japchae are introduced on TV during and immediately after holidays. Some people say pancakes are one of the most annoying dishes to prepare during the holidays. When you look at it, you may think it's a simple dish, but it takes a lot of time to prepare ingredients and always make several types of pancakes. The most commonly eaten pancakes include pumpkin pancakes, yuk pancakes, and three-color pancakes. There are also evangelism that are only found in certain areas.

Have you ever tried making traditional Korean pancakes? Have you tried Jeongwa Makgeolli on a rainy day? I really like it haha. My Korean friends sent me this during the holidays and I always enjoyed it haha.
