Next week is Hangeul Day! Today, I'd like to introduce Hangeul Day to you. Let's watch together!

1️⃣ Introduction to Hangeul Day

Hangeul Day, celebrated annually on October 9th, commemorates the promulgation of the Korean alphabet, Hangeul (Hunminjeongeum). Hangeul is a writing system created by King Sejong the Great to enable people to read and write easily and correctly. It is a scientific writing system that allows for the representation of spoken sounds at a glance. Hangeul Day was not previously a public holiday, but it was re-designated a public holiday in 2013. Now, it is legally recognized as a national holiday, further emphasizing the importance of the event.

2️⃣ 2025 Hangeul Day

To celebrate Hangeul Day in 2025, various regions and organizations are preparing various cultural events. For example, Sejong City is planning a marathon event called Hangeul Run under the theme of “Hangeul in Sejong.” It is said that two courses will be held: a 10.9km course for Hangeul Day and a 5.15km course to commemorate King Sejong’s birthday. There are also announcements of Hangeul exhibitions, experience booths, and music performances being prepared throughout the country. For example, “Hangeul × Tradition” collaboration goods and design products incorporating traditional patterns are being posted on social media.

3️⃣ International Students - Hangeul Day

Do you have any plans for Hangeul Day? Check out Hangeul Day events, exhibitions, and cultural experience booths held near your home or school. These events are also great opportunities for international students learning Korean. Beyond simply observing the events, you'll have a chance to delve deeper into Hangeul and experience its significance within Korean culture.

Hangeul Day isn't just a simple holiday. As an international student, it's a day that reminds me of my connection to the Korean language! I hope my fellow international students will also use this Hangeul Day as an opportunity to fall in love with the Korean language and its language even more.
