The Korean Chuseok holiday is approaching. International students, do you know much about Chuseok in Korea? Today, let’s learn about Chuseok in Korea.

1️⃣ Introduction to Korean Chuseok

Chuseok is a representative traditional Korean holiday, and falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. It is a day to give thanks for the autumn harvest, pay homage to ancestors, and spend time with family and relatives. Chuseok in Korea is an event to celebrate the abundant harvest after harvesting crops and fruits throughout the year, and is also called 'Gabae' or 'Hangawi'. Chuseok in 2024 is on Tuesday, September 17th~

2️⃣ Korean Chuseok Food

So what do Koreans usually eat during Chuseok? Let’s learn about Chuseok food. The first food is songpyeon. Songpyeon is a food that symbolizes Chuseok. It is made by kneading glutinous rice flour into a rice cake and filling it with various fillings such as beans, sesame seeds, and chestnuts, and forming it into a half-moon shape. Songpyeon is a representative food of Chuseok, and it contains the joy of harvest and gratitude. Have you tried songpyeon? It is really delicious.

In addition to songpyeon, we eat a lot of jeon! Jeon made with various ingredients such as pajeon, yukjeon, pumpkinjeon, and perilla leafjeon is a food that is always included in Chuseok ancestral rites tables and meals. Jeon is rich and delicious~

And we eat a lot of Japchae during Chuseok. Japchae is a dish made with dangmyeon (noodles made from sweet potato starch) as the main ingredient, and various vegetables and meats are stir-fried together. Japchae is one of my favorite Korean foods because it is sweet and has many ingredients.

3️⃣ Korean Chuseok Events

Many Koreans visit their ancestors’ graves during Chuseok. Visiting the graves is a ritual that takes place during traditional Korean holidays such as Seollal and Chuseok, where they visit their ancestors’ graves to care for them and pay their respects. Visiting the graves is an important custom that families perform to express their gratitude and respect for their ancestors and to honor their ancestors’ grace.
