Today, I'd like to introduce you to Korea's National Foundation Day. National Foundation Day (開天節) is one of Korea's national holidays, celebrated on October 3rd of the solar calendar. Let's take a look together!

1️⃣ Introduction to National Foundation Day

National Foundation Day (Gaecheonjeol) commemorates the founding of Gojoseon by Dangun Wanggeom in 2333 BC. It's a deeply meaningful day, symbolizing the founding of the first Korean nation and the origins of the nation. The word "Gaecheon" literally means "opening the sky," symbolizing the separation of heaven and earth, marking the beginning of a new nation!

2️⃣ The history and cultural significance of National Foundation Day

National Foundation Day is more than just a public holiday. For the Korean people, it's a significant day that reminds them of their roots and identity. For example, Daejonggyo designated this day as a national holiday and began celebrating it in 1909, and the Shanghai Provisional Government also developed the concept into "National Foundation Day." After the establishment of the Republic of Korea, the "National Holidays Act" was enacted, officially designating October 3rd of the solar calendar as National Foundation Day. Public institutions commemorate it with ceremonies and other events.

3️⃣ National Foundation Day in 2025

The 2025 Chuseok holiday has been confirmed to be a seven-day weekend, starting on Friday, October 3rd, National Foundation Day, and ending on Hangeul Day on October 9th. Many people were looking forward to this "golden holiday," but there's also the disappointment of the originally anticipated 10-day holiday being canceled due to the temporary holiday designation. What are international students doing during the National Foundation Day holiday? With the National Foundation Day holiday lasting so long, why not plan a trip out of the city, a traditional cultural event, or a visit to a museum?
