Korean National Foundation Day
2024. 9. 27.
Hello everyone~ 😊 Next Thursday is National Foundation Day in Korea. Do you know what kind of holiday National Foundation Day is? Today, I will introduce you to National Foundation Day! , 1️⃣ Introduction to National Foundation Day , National Foundation Day is celebrated on October 3rd every year. This day commemorates the founding of Gojoseon by Dangun Wanggeom in 2333 BC, and symbolizes the history and roots of the Korean people. , 2️⃣ The historical origin of Gaecheonjeol , Next, I will introduce the historical origins of Gaecheonjeol. The origins of Cheonjeol are largely related to three major events. The first is the descent of Hwanung. Hwanung, the son of Hwanin (god of heaven), came down from heaven to earth, wishing to rule over the human world. He came down under the Shindansu tree on Taebaeksan Mountain with 3,000 subjects and began to rule over the human world. This is expressed as 'Gaecheon (開天)', meaning 'heaven opened'. , The second is the founding of Dangun. After Hwanung came down to earth, there is a story about a bear and a tiger praying to become human. The bear, following Hwanung’s teachings, ate only mugwort and garlic for 100 days and became human, and he became Ungnyeo (熊女). Ungnyeo married Hwanung and gave birth to a son, who was Dangun Wanggeom. Dangun is said to have founded Gojoseon in 2333 BC, the first nation in Korea. , Lastly, the establishment of Gaecheonjeol. Gaecheonjeol was first established in 1909 during the Japanese colonial period under the name of 'Gaecheon Daeje', and was later designated as a national holiday after the establishment of the Republic of Korea in 1948. Its meaning is not simply a mythical story, but has become established as a day to commemorate the roots and historical pride of the Korean people. , Many people know that Gaecheonjeol is a public holiday, but many do not know its meaning and historical origins. Today, I will introduce the meaning and historical background of Gaecheonjeol in Korea. I hope you all have a great National Foundation Day holiday next week~!

How to sign up for a Korean mobile phone: Pretty Self-Opening Guide
2024. 9. 23.
How to open a self-service mobile phone account in Korea for foreigners! , People who spend a lot of money on their mobile phone plans have probably heard of the term “alt-phone” at least once! It is gaining popularity for its cheap rate plan, so I will share the self-registration process of Pretty , a budget phone company that I signed up for. I think it will be a great help to those who are thinking about saving money like me. In particular, it seems that there are not many places where foreigners can self-register. I found out while looking into it recently that there are a total of 61 mobile carriers in Korea. But I was really sad because there weren't many places where foreigners could easily join. 3 places where foreigners can open a budget phone account themselves While looking into budget phones, I found out that there are three places where you can quickly and easily self-open: KT M Mobile, Pretty, and Skylife . Self-opening is a method where you can open a phone account by simply authenticating yourself and entering a little bit of information without having to visit a store. In my case, I used to use Skylife budget phones, but I changed to Pretty after finding better conditions. In particular, since I recently purchased an iPhone 16 and wanted to switch to a cheaper plan, I went around various communities to gather information. , Reasons for choosing the Pretty Plan When I went to the Pretty homepage, there was a special rate plan that was running for a limited time in September. It was the same price as my original rate plan, but it had the benefit of providing more data . So I was originally planning to change to a cheaper rate plan, but I liked the conditions of this rate plan so much that I applied right away. Pretty is easy to open on your own , so I didn't have to visit the store. I was able to do everything online really quickly. However, it is said that opening is only available on weekdays. I waited anxiously for Monday all weekend. As you can see in the photo below, there is a separate section for foreigners to sign up. (I was really touched. ㅜㅜ) , How to open a pretty self account I will explain in detail how to open a self-account in Pretty. It is really simple, but there are some things to keep in mind, so please check carefully. Visit the Pretty homepage : When you enter the homepage, the opening-related menu stands out on the main screen. You can also easily find the event rate plan, so please refer to it. Select a plan : Select the plan you want and click ‘Sign up’. Identity verification and information entry : You must enter your mobile phone number, address, and account information in your name. At this time, for self-opening, you must have an account or credit card in your name. This part is important! Activation Complete : Once all the information is entered, the application is complete. Then, the activation request is sent to the telecommunications company, and from now on, if you wait, you will be contacted within a few hours (based on weekdays). The opening process is simpler than you think. I thought it would be complicated at first, but it was so convenient because I could do everything online. , Things to note when opening your own account Alien registration card is required! A bank account or credit card in your name: This is required. Please prepare it as you may not be able to open an account yourself without it. SIM card: After opening, you will receive a SIM card and need to insert it into your phone to use it normally. Usually, it is delivered quickly, so you don't have to worry. Or, you can apply for an ESIM and use it without a SIM card. Check your data: Check the data allowance of your subscription plan and be careful not to incur additional charges due to excessive usage. , While budget phones offer great benefits with their low-cost plans, it's important to make sure you have enough data and talk time before signing up. I tried self-registration through Pretty Altelphone, and it was really easy and fast to sign up. I highly recommend Altelphone, especially self-registration, to students who want to save on communication costs with a cheap plan. The biggest advantage is that it saves time and allows you to use it quickly without complicated procedures.

Kikine Dormitory Interview
2024. 9. 23.
Hello. Please introduce yourself and tell us what you are studying or working on in Korea. Hello! I am an international student studying mechanical engineering in Korea. When I first came to Korea, I was interested in IT, so I planned to study in that field. However, as I studied, I became more interested in mechanical engineering, so I changed my major. Mechanical engineering is a discipline that combines theory and practice, so there are many parts that I can learn through hands-on experience through experiments or projects, so it is very interesting and fun. I am currently studying this discipline in Korea and gaining various experiences. , As a foreign student or visitor living in Korea, have you had any difficulties or issues finding accommodation or housing (including dormitories)? If there were any inconveniences such as monthly or deposit rent, please feel free to tell us. When I first came to Korea, finding accommodation was quite difficult. In particular, I had an experience where I was rejected from boarding houses because I was a foreigner. The boarding house owners were mostly elderly people, and they thought that I might have trouble communicating with foreigners, so they didn't even accept my application. That experience was really sad and difficult. Also, when I was trying to start living on my own, the monthly rent and deposit were very burdensome. In Korea, the jeonse system is common, but for me, a foreigner, finding a jeonse was more complicated and difficult. Fortunately, as time passed, a new type of housing called a share house emerged, so now there are more options. I think a share house is a good choice for foreign students because the deposit and monthly rent are less burdensome, and the living environment looks comfortable. So how can these inconveniences be improved? If you have any thoughts, please let me know, but if not, that's fine. I think it is important to solve communication issues so that international students can find accommodations in Korea more easily. In the case of boarding houses, it would be good to have a mediator or platform that can help with communication to reduce anxiety caused by language barriers or cultural differences when accepting international students. Also, it would be helpful if there were more services that provide share houses exclusively for foreigners or more diverse housing options. And in the case of dormitories, cooking is a big issue for international students. There are many cases where they miss their home country’s food even while they are in Korea, so it would be good to have an environment where they can cook simple meals. Increasing the cooking area in the dormitory or providing a small kitchen space that can be used in common could be one solution. , Advice for friends who are preparing to study abroad or visit Korea for a long period of time! I would like to give some advice to my friends who are preparing to study abroad or visit Korea for a long period of time. First, life in Korea changes faster than you think and offers a variety of experiences, so it is important to have a flexible mindset and an open mind . There may be unexpected difficulties in the process of adapting to a new culture and environment, but if you accept them positively, you can learn a lot. Second, it is good to thoroughly prepare for housing issues in advance . Korea's housing culture has various systems such as jeonse, monthly rent, and deposits, so it is necessary to study in advance and prepare an appropriate budget. Also, try to make good use of alternatives such as share houses and dormitories. Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to the Kikine family? I want to express my gratitude to the Kikine family. Whenever I face various challenges while studying in Korea, I read the Kikine dormitory articles and sympathize and gain necessary information. I want to continue to study hard, communicate with various people, and grow even more. Kikine family, always stay healthy and happy! 😊

Life as a student in Korea: Challenges and Overcoming of Dormitory Life
2024. 9. 10.
My experience as a Korean student from Vietnam I am an international student from Vietnam, currently a senior in the Department of Tourism and Convention Studies at Pusan National University. I am learning Korean language and culture while studying abroad, and I am also doing various extracurricular activities and part-time jobs. The reason I first came to Korea was because I wanted to learn about Korea’s world-famous education system and tourism industry. Living in Korea has been an important experience for me in learning both language and culture. , Difficulties experienced in dormitory life In Korea, I mostly lived in school dormitories. The biggest problem I felt while living in Pusan National University's female dormitory was the food. The food provided in the dormitory did not suit my taste, and the menu was often repeated. Also, because the building was built in 2018, the dormitory fee was a bit high. In this regard, I considered other housing options, but I am staying in the dormitory because of its safety and convenience. , Ways to improve the dormitory environment As a solution to the inconvenience of dormitory life, I would like to suggest the autonomy of meal selection. If the dormitory-provided meal service is optional rather than mandatory, I think students will be able to cook food that suits their taste freely. Also, if the kitchen in the dormitory is improved to be wider and more convenient, students will be able to cook for themselves, which will greatly improve their quality of life. , To friends preparing to study abroad in Korea The most important thing for friends preparing to study abroad in Korea is language skills. In order to live and study in Korea, you need to be able to communicate at a basic level, so it is a good idea to prepare some Korean. Also, it may take time to get used to Korean food, so it will be a great help to bring home food to eat at first. Lastly, if you research and prepare enough information about life in Korea in advance, you will be able to have a much easier study abroad life. I hope this article will be of some help to my friends who dream of studying abroad in Korea, and I would also like to express my gratitude to the Kikine family. Thanks to you, I have been able to access useful information and knowledge, which has made my life in Korea much easier!
